Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) Courses Made Simple

What is the RCG course?
RCG stands for Responsible Conduct of Gambling. It’s a qualification required to work in a licensed gaming venue in New South Wales, such as a pub, club or casino with gaming machines.
The course covers how to identify problem gambling behaviour, how to interact with patrons responsibly, and how to follow the laws around gambling in NSW. Without an RCG certificate, you can’t legally work in a venue that operates gaming machines.
What is the difference between RSA and RCG?
RSA covers the responsible service of alcohol and is required for anyone serving or selling drinks in a licensed venue. RCG covers responsible conduct of gambling and is required for anyone working in a venue with gaming machines.
The two are separate qualifications with different content. Some venues require both, particularly pubs and clubs that serve alcohol and operate gaming machines at the same time.

Do I need both RSA and RCG?

How long is the RSA course?
The RSA course is delivered as a short, face-to-face session — typically completed in just one day.
Is my RSA certificate recognised nationally?
Your RSA certificate is a nationally approved qualification, which means it’s officially recognised for training purposes across Australia. However, each state and territory has its own rules about working in bars and licensed venues. Some states accept your RSA straight away, while others may require you to meet a few extra local rules. In short, your certificate lets you work in licensed venues, but you need to make sure you follow the specific rules of the state you want to work in.
Do I need prior experience?
No prior experience is needed. The course is designed for anyone looking to start a career in hospitality or gaming, including people who have never worked in a licensed venue before.

Will my RSA and RCG certificates expire?
RSA certificate expiry varies by state. In New South Wales, your RSA does not have an official expiry date, but some employers may ask you to refresh your training after a certain period.
The RCG certificate in NSW also does not expire, but again, individual employers or venues may have their own requirements. It’s always worth checking with your employer or the relevant licensing authority to confirm what’s expected in your specific role.
How long does the RSA and RCG combo course take?
The combo course is completed in a face-to-face session and takes 2 days from start to finish. This includes the training component for both RSA and RCG, plus time for the assessments.
