Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RSA course?
RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol. In NSW, it’s a mandatory training course for anyone who serves, sells, or supplies alcohol at a licensed venue.
The course covers your legal responsibilities under the NSW Liquor Act 2007, how to spot customers who’ve had too much, and how to handle a refusal. It’s required across pubs, clubs, restaurants, and bottle shops. You need to complete it before you start working in any licensed venue in NSW.
How long is the RSA course in NSW?
The NSW RSA course is designed to be done in a single sitting. Online, most people finish it in 1 day. A face-to-face class typically runs for around half a day.
Either way, you complete an assessment at the end and get your statement of attainment once you pass. There’s no need to come back for multiple sessions.
Do I need prior experience?
You don’t need prior experience to do the RSA course in NSW. It’s designed for people who are new to the hospitality industry and starts from the basics.
There are no entry requirements other than being able to read and understand English at a basic level. You can complete it before you’ve done a single shift at a bar.
Will my RSA certificate expire?
The RSA statement of attainment you get after completing the course doesn’t have a legislated expiry date in NSW. Once you have it, you don’t need to redo the training on a set schedule.
That said, if you’ve been out of the industry for a while, some employers may ask for a refresher, and it’s worth keeping an eye on any changes to the NSW Liquor Act that could affect your obligations.
Is the RSA NSW valid interstate?
Your NSW RSA is based on the nationally recognised unit SITHFAB021, so it’s generally accepted in most other Australian states and territories. However, each state runs its own liquor licensing system, and some may have additional local requirements on top of that.
If you’re planning to work interstate, check with the licensing authority in that state first as requirements can vary and some venues won’t accept an out-of-state RSA without verification.
