Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs a Basic Scaffolding license in Australia?
Anyone working with scaffolding over 4 metres high must have a Basic Scaffolding (SB) High-Risk Work Licence. This applies to construction workers, tradespeople, and site supervisors handling scaffolding assembly and dismantling.
What can I do with a Basic Scaffolding licence?
A Basic Scaffolding licence allows you to erect, alter, and dismantle modular, tube-and-coupler, and prefabricated scaffolding up to a certain height and load limit. It does not cover more complex scaffolding like cantilevered or suspended structures.
Do I need experience to take the Basic Scaffolding course?
No prior experience is required, but you must meet basic literacy and numeracy requirements to follow safety procedures and complete assessments. A White Card is also required before working on a construction site.
How long is a Basic Scaffolding licence valid for?
A High-Risk Work Licence for scaffolding is valid for 5 years. You’ll need to renew it through your state’s workplace safety authority before it expires.
Can I upgrade to an Intermediate or Advanced Scaffolding licence later?
Yes, once you have experience with basic scaffolding, you can progress to Intermediate and Advanced Scaffolding courses, which cover more complex structures like suspended and cantilevered scaffolds.
Is there a physical requirement for the course?
Yes, scaffolding work is physically demanding, involving climbing, lifting, and working at heights. You should be in good physical health and comfortable working on elevated platforms.
Can I complete the Basic Scaffolding course online?
No, due to the practical nature of scaffolding training, you must attend an in-person course at a registered training provider.
