Frequently Asked Questions
What is the TAS RSA course?
The RSA course (SITHFAB021 – Provide responsible service of alcohol) teaches you how to serve alcohol legally, safely, and responsibly in licensed venues across Tasmania and Australia.
How long is the TAS RSA course?
The RSA course is delivered as a short, face-to-face session, completed in just one day.
Is my RSA certificate recognised nationally?
Your RSA certificate is a nationally approved qualification, officially recognised across Australia. That said, each state has its own rules. Queensland, WA, Tasmania, SA, and the NT all accept the national RSA with no extra steps, though the NT requires you to renew every three years.
The ACT accepts it too, but only if your certificate is less than three years old. NSW is stricter. howver. Permanent residents need to complete a bridging course and get a local Competency Card. Victoria is the most different, requiring you to complete an extra online module through the LCV Learning Hub on top of your existing RSA. So your certificate is a solid starting point, but always check the rules of the state you want to work in before you start.
Do I need prior experience?
No experience is needed. The course is open to anyone looking to work in bars, clubs, restaurants, or other venues that serve alcohol.
Will my RSA TAS certificate expire?
Your TAS RSA certificate doesn’t expire, and the same goes for WA, SA, and Queensland. The Northern Territory and the ACT are different, both require you to renew every three years.
NSW and Victoria have their own systems, so expiry works a little differently depending on the card or completion certificate issued there. The short version: you’re fine in most states, but don’t assume your certificate stays valid everywhere without checking first.
